Derry
town in Northern Ireland, UK somewhat is a special town. The story focused on five
teenagers in the all-girls school and their daily life. This series somehow a
comedy and light story, but it always fresh and deliver new stories.
Erin is more likely the main
character between the other four friends. In the first episode in the first
season, we will know the melancholic Erin, who likes writing and sometimes
expressed too excessive. Her behavior made me sometimes resentful to her, but
it made her character funny. Then, we also know her family, which started from
her mother, father, grandparents, and her close cousin; Ola. Ola is the most
unique character, I think. She is always herself, honest, and not complicated;
she is the simplest character (and the tallest).
Even Erin and Ola have a unique
character, the other friend having it too. Clare is the cutest character, not
because she has a cute appraisal, but her attitude somehow always makes me
laughed. She talks too much and she is easily panicked. But she is tender, she
cares about her friends. Moreover, with her body size, she has issues with her
confidence.
Their divergences are not
stopped in Clare. That is weird if you have a friendship gang but none of them
is a rebel. So, Michelle took that part, she becomes the most rebellious in the
gang. Several problems often started from Michelle (or Erin in the 2nd).
Luckily, there one is normal. James, the boy one and only, is the most normal
member of the gang. He is Michelle’s cousin, and he had forced to join in
all-girls Catholic School. He feels awkward at first (Actually I felt he had
hard times until the end in adjusting with the rest of the gang). Besides that,
he cares so much for his girl-friends.
You can imagine how screwed up
the gang. Their ‘little bit off’ personalities always direct them into the
weird troubles. Of course, they have conflict sometimes, but it indeed the
heart-warming moment. Story not only focuses on the gang but also their family.
They live in the early 1990s, so you can imagine how their family’s life
without technology.
Derry girls is simple and full of heart-warming moments. Moreover, the dialogue is catchy and hilarious. If you are
Irish, it might give you a nostalgic atmosphere. The production team creates
the detail of the cinematography and the setting. If you are fans of light
comedy and teen story, you certainly like this. This is my first teen TV series
that I like the most even it is not nearly related the modern teen problems.
Derry Girls sometimes related to heavy problems like racism (issues LGBT too),
but it could deliver the story lightly and easily to watch.
