Rivers of London, Whodunnit Story Mixed with Urban Fantasy

Book title: Rivers of London (Rivers of London #1) My Rating: 4,2 The first book from the Rivers of London series told about Peter Grant, a constable from the Police Department of London. After the probation phase ended, Peter accidentally became Nightingale’s student. Being Nightingale’s student was not only a usual constable but also a wizard apprentice. He is involved in the other side of London; magic, mystical creatures, ghost world, et cetera.  As you can see from the title, the setting of the story happened mostly in London. It may be easier for Londoners to comprehend the story because the writer often told the events with a detailed background and places. However, I am not Londoner, even not an English native speaker, so I sometimes found it difficult to read some of the words (those are some slang) and understand the setting of the story. Sometimes, I was searching at Google to know what the place looks like.  Rivers of London also take some references from many po...

The Wall of Storms: Proper Way to Retell Human, Magical Technology, and Asia Culture

Book Title: The Dandelion Dynasty #2 The Wall of Storms Author: Ken Liu My Rating: 4,5 The Wall of Storms focuses on how the kingdom of Dara survived and changed. The first part mainly focuses on Zomi Kidosu’s story, a woman from Daru Island who was trying to pursue her dream; see the world and learn more. The story slowly shifted to the real conflicts that Emperor Ragin and the government of Dara faced. The rebellion sparked from the former aristocrat of Mata Zyndu Empire. And, the main problems started when Lyucuu, the barbarian clan from another side of the sea came. This is phenomenal. Even though I haven't read the first book, I love the story instantly. The setting seems like Avatar: The Last Airbender, but without supernatural elements. All of the magic in this book come from technology which seems magical and classy. The dynasty and its history are built comprehensively. The literature, culture, principles, even though mostly referenced from Chinese Culture, are blended bea...

Recursion: The "Box" Full of Surprise and Mind-Blowing

Hello! It has been a long time, I haven't written an article on this blog.  I want to introduce my first review of a book that I've finished. I wrote the review of this book in Goodreads, only a simple review, though. Tralala… this is the book Recursion by Black Crouch Rating overall: 4,3 I am still confused to decide between 4 or 4,3 for the rating of this book. But, I decided 4,3. However, it is not the highest rating I've given to my other's book that I've read. So there are my points, the strengths, and the drawbacks. This book is my genre. What I mean is, the book caught my time and attention because the genre is my favorite. Sci-fi, with the mind-bending story, some twists, and time-travel. Wow, perfect. So, this book has reached my satisfaction easily. 1. The big twist (And the first twist, I think), I love it. I didn't see how the story coming that way. 2. The plot is leading good and the characterization is reasonable. The causes and effects for the mai...
