The psychological effect of Horror, Criminal, Mystery, Thriller, and Mind-Bending Story

What do you think after you watched or read horror? Did you enjoy it or not? Some people pleasured it but some of them hated it most of their life. What’s interesting in Horror story? Several of them are only fiction works but some are true stories. One example that the public has known as fiction story is Urban Legend. Each country has its urban legend stories and several people mainly elders still believe that those stories are real.

In general, we like fiction stories that we never really experienced in the real world, although several people might experience it. Some horror aspects like a ghost and other world are never understandable to people. We never really know how could they exist, where they come from, is the other world really exist, and others question that are belong to mysteries. Through horror stories, we can experience and pleasured the story that we never felt before.

Moreover, a horror story has a different effect on other kinds of fiction. Horror stories usually bring out fear. This feeling, the fear, activated a part of the brain that is named amygdala. Amygdala worked to release endorphins to increase the level of dopamine. So, what will happen if the level of dopamine rising? Dopamine has an incredible effect on the human body. It could increase human body energy so that person becomes more energetic and tensed. The blood pressure increase and the heart flutter more quickly than before. Not only that, but humans also release more sweat than before. The other fact, dopamine doesn’t always cause fear. Dopamine also influences happy and surprise emotions.

The horror story has the same effect as in thriller story. But, those two kinds of stories have different effects. Thriller usually built its momentum since the story started. The viewer who watched it usually felt thrilled when the story started. On the other hand, horror momentum only occurred in several parts of the story and it usually occurred suddenly (you can name it jumpscare). The other difference is a thriller usually told in the real setting. People more engaged anxious feelings in a thriller than horror because the event in thriller story has a bigger possibility happened than a horror story.

The last difference is the sensation that released over the body. While we watch horror movies, we felt creep and fear. Meanwhile, we felt tense, thrilled, and sometimes anxious, while we watch thriller. The feeling of tense has the slightest difference with fear. Tense isn’t always correlated to fear, but we could feel it when we are happy, surprised, angry, and etc. So, tense is a basic reaction after we felt something that unusually we got in an ordinary situation.

Then, how about crime and mystery? Crime stories usually tell about detective and criminals. The criminals vary in many kinds, for example like a killer (the most used criminal in the story), thief, terrorist or bomber, etc. Its story has a similar story with the other stories, the detective trying to catch the criminal or otherwise, the criminal trying to escape from detective or police. That pattern is titled “mouse and cat” plot because it always about catching, escaping, hiding, and solving the puzzles.

So, why people like crime stories? First of all, the viewer could experience other problems without having to solve them. There are usually puzzles or challenges that aren’t easy to solve, and the other emotional problems like the death of family, getting jailed, etc. Viewers who see from detective sides can feel the emotion of winning over the bad guys. On the other side, viewers who see from criminal sides can feel the emotion of doing horrible actions and thrilling experiences to escape from the police or detective. Viewers can project their aggressiveness from watching a criminal movie, through the criminal act. Also, the viewer wants to understand why criminals doing such a gruesome, horrible, and law-crossed act. Therefore, they could understand that an evil person, after all, is a human too. They’ll see both two sides, the protagonist (usually person solving the problem like a detective, etc) and the antagonist or criminal.

In the last, a mind-bending movie is also sub-genre which is related to the plot story. The movie or series titled as mind-bending meant it has a confusing plot story and twisted ending. It usually has a layered story, for example, the scenes that we see in the movie or series that is not the wholesome plot story. Something usually is hidden and indeed is not shown in the movie or series.

This story is a mix-bag. With little bit horror tone, a mind-bending story of Donnie Darko left the viewers confused until the last minute.

What is the uniqueness of the mind-bending story? The viewer who has watched it usually hardly moved on to the other movie before they know the truth. They become confused and then thought about it several times. After the movie ended, viewers are still looked surprised or unbelievable about the plot story or ending in the story. They still think that movie several times straight after they watched it.

For several viewers, this kind of movie is too complicated or confusing for them. Therefore, they who don’t like complicated things or something that made them think more and more will never like mind-bending or mind-blowing plot story. But, if you the kind of person who likes something complicated, layered, twisted, and needed to think over and over, you mostly like a mind-blowing story.

TV SHOW SCI-FI, MYSTERY, & SUPERNATURAL REVIEW! #3

Part 3 (Castle Rock, Undone, Maniac, Channel Zero) Again, having fun ride with me!! Let’s go Castle Rock  Castle Rock adapted from Stephen King’s novels. Castle Rock's popularity was rising after It, a movie that adapted also from Stephen King's novel . Castle Rock season one is my favorite than the second because the story is more scary and layered. It combines horror, mystery, and a little bit of science fiction so well. At first, it was more horror and mystery. A police found a strange man in a cage. The strange man gives several unlucky events to the people in Castle Rock. He called as the devil. But, who is he actually? The performance of Bill Skarsgard is never disappointed. He shows one of his best performances besides his performance as Pennywise in It. At the end of season one, the twist unfolds. This was when the story become more into science-fiction and supernatural. The second season is much different than the first; there are dead people becoming zombies and the...

Hello! Welcome to the third batch of my reading routine. It has been so loongg, I didn't post something about books. I have something more important right now, so my reading routine has lef out awhile from my life.  Those books (Inferno excluded) have been in my list since July 2021. I've read 3 of them and I will write the "standalone" review later. First of all, I share you some hints about my four new books.  1. The Craftsman (by Sharon Bolton) When I found this book in BBW, I was honestly intrigued by the sypnosis. This book has some exciting elements, which are witchcraft and mystery. It look promising, thereby this book will be the last one I read. 2. The Fourth Monkey (J.D.Baker) This one is the first book from The First Monkey series. The book focused on the mystery of a death of infamous criminal. The duo detective in this case and the rest of team tried to find the truth behind the death, is  the criminal that they really seek after for a long time, or ju...
