Recursion: The "Box" Full of Surprise and Mind-Blowing

Hello! It has been a long time, I haven't written an article on this blog.

I want to introduce my first review of a book that I've finished. I wrote the review of this book in Goodreads, only a simple review, though. Tralala… this is the book

Recursion by Black Crouch

Rating overall: 4,3

I am still confused to decide between 4 or 4,3 for the rating of this book. But, I decided 4,3. However, it is not the highest rating I've given to my other's book that I've read. So there are my points, the strengths, and the drawbacks.

This book is my genre. What I mean is, the book caught my time and attention because the genre is my favorite. Sci-fi, with the mind-bending story, some twists, and time-travel. Wow, perfect. So, this book has reached my satisfaction easily.

1. The big twist (And the first twist, I think), I love it. I didn't see how the story coming that way.

2. The plot is leading good and the characterization is reasonable. The causes and effects for the main character are matched.

3. The book has something similar to a western TV series titled The OA. The OA told about a Near Death Experiment that could make people moving to other parallel worlds. To do the experiment, the participant should use the same way as the book doing memory activation; the deprivation tank and that chair. Fortunately, the plot is different.

4. SPOILER: the ending is a drawback. The ending is actually predictable since the midway of the book. Might be just me, but I can't think of the other way to end the story.

5. The second half of the book is too fast-paced. I think It should be slower and dig deeper into the relationship between both characters. Barry and Helena's relationship is mostly explained by the narrative, not the dialogue. I need the chemistry between them built more believable and not like an instant thing.

6. The idea is mesmerizing, but it sometimes felt too grand. The memory disaster that happened, I find it is escalated too fast, to be a nuclear war. Just, it can escalate to another way? how can life always lead to the same final even it happened 6 times?

The book is actually not that hard to consume by non-reader of a sci-fi book. I think it is not that "mind-bending", but it might because my expectation is too high before reading the book. I like to watch twisty and mind-bending movies so it led my expectation higher. But, the book still fulfills my expectation and It is still recommended for everyone. Attention, everyone even you are not fans of sci-fi.

TV SHOW SCI-FI, MYSTERY, & SUPERNATURAL REVIEW! #3

Part 3 (Castle Rock, Undone, Maniac, Channel Zero) Again, having fun ride with me!! Let’s go Castle Rock  Castle Rock adapted from Stephen King’s novels. Castle Rock's popularity was rising after It, a movie that adapted also from Stephen King's novel . Castle Rock season one is my favorite than the second because the story is more scary and layered. It combines horror, mystery, and a little bit of science fiction so well. At first, it was more horror and mystery. A police found a strange man in a cage. The strange man gives several unlucky events to the people in Castle Rock. He called as the devil. But, who is he actually? The performance of Bill Skarsgard is never disappointed. He shows one of his best performances besides his performance as Pennywise in It. At the end of season one, the twist unfolds. This was when the story become more into science-fiction and supernatural. The second season is much different than the first; there are dead people becoming zombies and the...

Happy Reading #3

Hello! Welcome to the third batch of my reading routine. It has been so loongg, I didn't post something about books. I have something more important right now, so my reading routine has lef out awhile from my life.  Those books (Inferno excluded) have been in my list since July 2021. I've read 3 of them and I will write the "standalone" review later. First of all, I share you some hints about my four new books.  1. The Craftsman (by Sharon Bolton) When I found this book in BBW, I was honestly intrigued by the sypnosis. This book has some exciting elements, which are witchcraft and mystery. It look promising, thereby this book will be the last one I read. 2. The Fourth Monkey (J.D.Baker) This one is the first book from The First Monkey series. The book focused on the mystery of a death of infamous criminal. The duo detective in this case and the rest of team tried to find the truth behind the death, is  the criminal that they really seek after for a long time, or ju...
