Part 4 (Tales from The Loop, Devs, Calls, Archive 81)
Tales from The Loop
This show is an anthology series that each episode delivers a different story. Several episodes are continuity from the episodes before so that it has a main plot and main characters that are related to each other. Tales from The Loop tell about people who live above “The Loop”, a machine built to explore the mysteries of the universe. The show takes science-fiction as the major genre, but it combines other genres, such as family drama and human relationships. Several episodes deliver an original idea, even though some of those pick the usual plot story in the science-fiction genre. Plus, I like the cinematography; it is very poetic and peaceful!
The story is actually focused more on a family. The mother, Loretta; The father, George; The first son, Jakob, and his best friend, Danny; the second son, Cole; and the Grandfather. The family built the Loop and that machine change their life forever. There are my favorite episodes in Tales from The Loop:
Episode 2 – Transpose: The story focus on two teenage boys, Danny and Jakob found a machine that could swap their souls between themselves. The ending of this episode is heartbreaking; it is sad. I like this episode because I don’t expect the ending.
Episode 7 – Enemies: This episode delivers a different taste than the others. It tells about the adventure of a child that lost on a mysterious island. The episode is thrilling and eerie but this one is also emotional.
Episode 8 – Home: This is the saddest one. After watching this episode, I felt empty and sad. It is continuity from the event that happen at episode 2.
Devs
Devs is a convoluted show. This is another experiment “thing” story that started from a mystery of the disappearance of Lily’s boyfriend. Lily is a computer engineer in a secretive company. In a night, Sergei, her boyfriend was disappeared when he came to Lily’s company. Lily tried to find Sergei but she found that her company was hiding something, a Devs project that changed her life.
The story is mind-bending and picks up the original idea. The Devs project itself is impressive and magnificent even though it was some “gray area” in developing the project. I found the invention of Devs is a true threat to humanity. Meanwhile, the idea is awesome, the plot and the acting are sometimes off. In the middle of the season, I found it boring, even though it comes better to the end of the season.
Calls
The show has a different format than the others. It just shows the call line and the subtitle of the voice. Just it, but the show can give some interesting story. Calls is an anthology series, so every episode tells a different story. Each episode has a different story and characters, but they are involved in some major events that affect their life little by little. There are appearance of monsters and strange events; colliding people in their past and future. It was scary and fascinating at the same time after I found the pattern of events that repeated in the plot. My favorite episodes are:
Episode 2 –The Beginning: A man lost while driving a car, so he tried to call his relative. Surprisingly, he found that his relatives become older, meanwhile he stayed at his age. This episode is so good that made me shiver.
Episode 3 – Pedro across the street: This episode takes a different genre than the two before. It tells about two callers that are involved in a plan to a bank heist, but the detective is confused about who is said the truth. It is entertaining and the twist, in the end, is shocking!
Episode 7 – Mom: This episode is the saddest one. It picks the same background as episode 2, an intersection in the road that could make you call yourself or others from the past or future.
Episode 8 – Is There a Scientist on a Plane and Episode 9 – Leap Year Girl take the same plot that correlated to each other. Episode 8 focuses on how the airplane lost in “time” because it was landing at the wrong time that it should be. Episode 9 tells about two scientists who tried to find the answer to what and why all of the strange events happened. Episodes 8 and 9 unveils the coming of dystopia.
Archive 81
Archive 81 adapted from the popular podcast with the same title. It tells about Dan as an archivist that found videotapes about Melody Pendras and her research at Visser Building back in the 90s. Dan was invited by a man who works in a suspicious company to archive more videotapes about Melody Pendras and Visser community. The tapes convey that Dan’s father was somehow also involved with Melody. The story escalated from the mystery about Dan’s father and Melody Pendras into the cult organization behind the Visser. The cult also involved witchcraft and another dimension.
Archive 81 is a thrilling ride. I like how the story combines mystery, supernatural, and horror very well. In some scenes, it can be scary, especially the cult activities and witches. The ending gives the plot to develop more after we know that it pick science-fiction elements too. I want to know the next season but there is still no sign of the new season, so that I listen to the podcast. Wow, it gives me a surprise! The first season of the podcast is so different than season one. The podcast is more into supernatural and Lovecraftian horror. I have listened to the second season of the podcast and It explores another dimension named The City. The City is a strange dimension; everything is worked differently than the normal human dimension… I hope Archive 81 TV show gets more season so I could see how The City is portrayed in cinema!
